AURA & ELIAS
During our summer holidays, we love to spend time in the countryside even though we find our way of life very urban. In fact, we have two summer cottages to choose between! That’s because both of our families own one. Aura’s cottage is located in Kuopio which is about 400 km from Helsinki and Elias’ one is in Suomenniemi, 2 hours and 45 minutes drive from Helsinki. We travel there by train and bus because we don’t have a car.
This summer we have had more time to spend in the countryside because we didn’t book any trip abroad. Iris loves to spend time in our summer cottage discovering the nature and to see our relatives and especially her cousins.
The best part of spending time in the countryside is the time spent outdoors together without any hurry. There we drink our morning coffee in the garden, read books and have more conversations together because we don’t bring our computers and other disturbing stuff with us. Instead, we love to swim in the lake and go to the sauna after that. (We prefer to heat the sauna at least once a day!)We also do some fishing, grilling, playing summer games like pétanque, croquet or Mölkky for example.
Mölkky is very simple and genuine Finnish outdoor game based on throwing wooden pins in order to knock over other wooden pins. Simple but so funny!
During holidays we have more time to consider for the dinners and drinks. Our specialty is mojito, in which we put mint leafs from our own summer garden!
Local products like “summer potatoes” and other seasonal food are in our favor while spending time in the cottage. How good Finnish strawberries and potatoes taste in summer! When we don’t know what to have for dinner, we eat a-bit-of-everything and call it as “summer meal”: Finnish squeaky cheese, potatoes, green salad with sweet tomatoes, fish etc. Easy but tasty! Potatoes with butter or sour cream sauce with dill and a hint of lemon is a famous Finnish and Nordic combination and particularly popular base of meal in the summertime.
That kind of easygoing time spent with our own family is the best. The fact is that one week in the summer cottage feels thousand times more relaxing and refreshing than a week spent on a beach holiday with thousands of other people.
Aura & Elias
A father, a mother and a daughter, Iris, born in July 2015. Like many little girls, Iris loves to take care of her dolls and play with her toys.
Father, Elias, is a classical musician. He plays the flute and teaches flute playing. He dreams about extending his professional skills to the field of instrument repairing. Mother Aura has finished her studies at the University of Helsinki and at the moment she takes care of Iris at home.
Together we love to travel, enjoy cultural events and eat tasty food. We appreciate clean, healthy and ecological lifestyle even though we live in the middle of Helsinki. In our blog you’ll find stories about our urban life as a Finnish family.
